Human Service Technology Department
Wake Tech offers Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees in Human Service Technology. Students can earn an AAS in Human Services, which is further described below on this page. Students can also earn an AAS degree in Substance Abuse and additional details for this program are described in the section Substance Abuse Program located in the left margin of this site.
In addition to associate degrees, Individuals who already have a Bachelors or Masters degree in a Human Service related field and would like to pursue certification through the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board (NCSAPPB) can enroll in the substance abuse certificate program. Human Services Program of Study
The Human Services Technology (HST) curriculum prepares students for entry-level positions in institutions and agencies which provide social, community, and education services. An emphasis is placed on development of relevant knowledge, North Carolina’s best practice skills, and attitudes in human services. Fieldwork experience provides students the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom. The Wake Technical Community College HST program has been approved by The Council for Standards in Human Services Education. Graduates qualify for position in mental health, childcare, family services, social services, rehabilitation, corrections, residential services and educational agencies.
PHILOSOPHY OF HUMAN SERVICES
The Human Services curriculum is designed to train and prepare graduates to fulfill a wide range of consumer needs in a variety of human service settings in order to enable people to live more satisfying,
autonomous and productive lives.
PROGRAM GOALS
- To prepare graduates for a career in Human Services.
- To prepare graduates to effectively match consumer needs with available community resources.
- To increase the capacity for self-awareness and personal growth.
- To develop a thoughtful, genuine, and empathetic attitude toward human beings.
- To expand and implement knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to help people help themselves.
- To facilitate articulation with Bachelor degree programs.
CLIENT POPULATIONS
Graduates from the Human Services program work with the following populations:
- The Elderly
- At Risk Adolescents
- People with Developmental Disabilities
- The Mentally Ill
- Victims of Domestic Violence
- Homeless individuals and families
- Substance Abusers
- Persons with HIV/AIDS and other Public Health services
- Vocational Rehabilitation
WHO STUDIES HUMAN SERVICES TECHNOLOGY?
Students enrolled in the program range from recent high school graduates to older individuals desiring a
career change to homemakers seeking a career outside the home. Students come from a variety of cultural, religious, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Students generally share a desire to
have a positive impact on their community through giving of themselves.
